Former finalist Juan Carlos Ferrero is up against Jarkko Nieminen in the German Open Tennis Championships third round.

Ferrero made the final all the way back in 2001, losing to Albert Portas that day. Since then this illustrious event has been downgraded from Masters Series status though it still remains as an ATP 500 tournament.
Ferrero peaked in 2010 during the February-March Latin American swing where he won 14 straight matches. He has not high those heights since then but made the semis last week in Stuttgart.
His 7-6, 6-1 second round win over Jan Hajek was far more straightforward than Nieminen's marathon battle with ninth seed Gilles Simon who he eventually outlasted 7-5 in the third.
Ferrero leads 3-1 on the head-to-head and has won two of their three matches on the dirt. Nieminen's sole win came four years ago in Bastad.
