Juan Carlos Ferrero takes on local favourite Florian Mayer in the Hamburg quarters.

Ferrero had a hard fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over dangerous Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the third round and he will need to step it up against Mayer if he’s going to remain in with a chance of repeating his 2001 run to the final at this tournament.

Mayer is enjoying strong support from the crowds in Hamburg and it spurred him on to a 7-6, 6-0 win over Maximo Gonzalez in the last 16. Mayer is full appreciating the efforts of his fan base, describing the support as “overwhelming.”

However Ferrero holds a dominant 4-0 head-to-head record against the German and has only ever dropped one set against him. They have only played once before on clay, in Palermo 2005 where Ferrero won 6-3, 6-3.

Ferrero should get through this one, probably requiring three sets again.
