Golubev caused the big upset of round three, earning his first top ten scalp by defeating Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4. It was the perfect way for Kazakhstan’s top player to celebrate his 23rd birthday.

This week is the first time Golubev has won consecutive ATP matches since 2008.

Istomin caused a huge upset of his own in round two defeating Bastad champion Nicolas Almagro 7-6, 7-6. Istomin served notice of his talent during the grass court season where he nearly defeated Rafael Nadal at Queens and is starting to make some real progress up the rankings.

He backed that up with a gritty 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Germany’s Julian Reister in the last 16.

Looking ahead to the match Golubev said, “We’re good friends. But on the court you can’t be friends, so I will just have to try to play like today. I will have to be concentrated and I will give all my best for a win.”

This will be a close one but Istomin is the more consistent of the two players and his win over Almagro was more impressive. We suggest backing him to win this one
