Juan Carlos Ferrero meets Dominik Meffert in round one of the ATP Halle Open
The main draw for this week’s ATP Halle Open, is finally underway. This event marks the beginning of this season’s grass-court tennis, and also gives us our first glimpse of grass-court tennis in the run-up to Wimbledon.
In round one, we will get to see Juan Carlos Ferrero play his first ATP World Tour match since April, where he was eliminated in the first round at the Rome Masters by Santiago Giraldo. He is currently ranked eighteenth in the world, and should be a serious contender for this week’s Halle Open. His first test will occur today, in the shape of Dominik Meffert of Germany.
Meffert is the world number one hundred and eighty-two, and should not cause Ferrero too much trouble. However, his physical presence may allow for him to get a foothold in the game. Meffert measures in at just under two metres tall, and might be able to fully utilize the grass surface if he can get the most out of his service game.
In truth though, this is Ferrero’s match to lose. He’ll be doing whatever he can to ensure that his return to the Tour will begin with a victory, and it’s likely that he’ll have too much for Meffert. It will be intriguing to see what Ferrero can do on the grass here, and to assess what kind of a chance he has of doing well at Wimbledon.
