The all Spanish showdown between Albert Montanes and Daniel Gimeno-Traver looks likely to be one of the highlights of the second round in Estoril. Montanes is the favourite here, and proved last year that he can go all the way in this event.

His opponent, Gimeno-Traver, is not to be overlooked though. Gimeno-Traver tends to thrive on a clay surface and defeated Montanes on the clay courts of Acapulco in straight sets last year. Montanes has since avenged this defeat this year at the same location, but was pushed into three sets in a difficult match.

Montanes has beaten top-class opposition such as Marcos Baghdatis and Marin Cilic this year, but was eliminated in his first matches in both Rome and Barcelona, so it’s not so easy to anticipate how well he’s going to play.

Gimeno-Traver might be able to eliminate the reigning champion here if the results in Mexico are anything to go by. He is playing reasonably well of late as well. Even so, Montanes is more likely to progress to the next round here.
