Juan Martin Del Potro looks to reach his second ATP final of the year when he takes on Pablo Cuevas this afternoon.
Del Potro overcame both rain delays and top seed Robin Soderling to book his place in the semi-finals on a frustrating Friday afternoon for both players and fans. Del Potro took the first set 6-4 but was in trouble at 4-1 down in the second set when the rain first began to fall. It was a fortunate break for the Argentine as Soderling had just begun to find his hitting rhythm and on the resumption nearly four hours later, it was a completely different match, Del Potro reeling off six of the final seven games to prevail 6-4, 7-5.
"I had to really focus, with the rain delay," Del Potro said. "I am very happy as I took my opportunities in the second set on return to the court. My wrist is almost fine. It is getting better, but when the weather is really humid I can feel something. That is normal the doctors say. I am getting better, quicker than I thought."
Cuevas has been a major dark horse over the past month, stunning Andy Roddick in Miami, reaching the Houston semi-finals and beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets earlier this week. The Uruguayan continued his giant-killing run with a 6-4, 6-2 quarter-final victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci.
Prediction: Del Potro in two
