British wildcard James Ward aims to continue his run at Eastbourne against Rainer Schuettler.

Ward is ranked well outside the top 200 and was not deemed worthy of a Wimbledon wildcard by the LTA but stunned second seed Feliciano Lopez in the first round. Lopez was not at his best and retired at 6-3, 5-4 down with a slight strain as a precaution ahead of Wimbledon.

However it was a fine display from Ward who powered down a succession of big serves from his 6’3 frame and also possesses a very solid double-handed backhand.

He now faces veteran Rainer Schuettler who knocked out Gael Monfils on the way to the Queens semis last week. Schuettler had no problems in defeating Andrey Golubev 6-2, 6-3 in the first round here.

Schuettler will be a tricky opponent for Ward as he returns well and is very fast around the court. Ward is also bound to have some sort of comedown from his big win over Lopez so unless he plays out of his skin again, Schuettler will probably win fairly comfortably.
