Djokovic has won 16 tour titles so far in his short career but has yet to retain any of them the following year and he is keen to end that record.

Roger Federer’s withdrawal on the eve of the tournament with a lung infection has improved Djokovic’s chances but the field is still exceptionally strong with Andy Murray, Nikolay Davydenko and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga among the main threats.

Djokovic became world number two for the first time earlier this year after Rafael Nadal’s failure to defend his Australian Open title but Djokovic feels he deserves his ranking, citing a brilliant run of form in the autumn which saw him regarded as the player to beat indoors.

“I had a fantastic end to the season. That enabled me to get to No 2 and I am now hoping to go a step further,” he said. “My lifetime goal has been to become the best in the world and I’m determined to achieve that.”

Djokovic begins his Dubai campaign on Monday against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
