2007 Dubai finalist Mikhail Youzhny takes on a confident Jurgen Melzer in the semi-finals.

Melzer has enjoyed a fine run this week, defeating Tommy Robredo and Marin Cilic in straight sets. His 7-5, 7-6 win over the in-form Cilic who already has two titles to his name in 2010, was particularly impressive given how he had to recover from a 4-1 first set deficit.

Melzer has been very successful in the windy conditions this week, mixing up his game, often with a bit of serve-volley play and keeping opponents off balance.

After that win he clearly fancies his chances of making the final. “I think if you win three matches in two sets and beat Robredo and Cilic back to back, you have to be confident,” he said. “I'm really looking forward. I'm enjoying this week here.” 

Youzhny is wary, having seen his opponent’s form against Cilic and he was keen to play down his chances. “I saw how Jurgen beat Cilic,” Youzhny said. “It was a really tough match for him and he played well. He's had really good results. So it will be tough.”  

Youzhny has had a fairly easy passage to the semi-finals. Janko Tipsarevic looked visibly drained during their quarter-final from Wednesday’s win over Andy Murray and succumbed meekly 6-3, 6-4.

Youzhny leads 3-2 on the head-to-heads. Melzer had the edge over the Russian early on in their careers, but since 2006 Youzhny has won their last three matches including a 6-4, 6-4 victory on clay last year.
