Andy Murray among the favourites in Dubai this week. Murray has defended his decision not to compete in Rotterdam and Marseille over the last fortnight.

Murray is 2/1 favourite to win the tournament with Ladbrokes

Murray had originally planned Marseille as his first tournament after the Australian Open and his decision to not compete left the tournament bereft of any real star names and angered the organisers.

However Murray insists it was the correct decision after an emotional and physically draining month in Australia, culminating in his second grand slam final.

Instead he begins his preparations for the big Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami with the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai.

"I don't want to be going over to Indian Wells, Miami with niggles. By the end of that month you're undoubtedly going to be hurting so you don't want to go into the tournaments already sore,” Murray said. "So I needed make sure that I took enough time after Australia. I need to make sure that I'm fresh. My back was sore, my knee was hurting, my hip.”

“After Australia I needed to make sure I got those things right.  A lot of it is through tiredness, but the sport is such a physical one. Your body takes such a pounding and over the course of the two weeks you're hitting, playing, doing interviews as well. I'm not complaining about it, but it des take away some energy.”
