Nadal has been cruising on easy street all week in Doha, yet to drop more than six games in a match. His path to the semi-finals was made even easier on Thursday when Steve Darcis retired at 6-1, 2-0 down in their quarter-final.
Nadal has had few problems in the past with his next opponent, Serbia’s Victor Troicki. Nadal beat him twice in the slams in 2008, both times in straight sets. The last encounter was a very one-sided 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of the 2008 US Open.
However the lanky Troicki is improving all the time. A decent hard court player he is now ranked 29 in the world with a cannon of a serve.
He had to battle to make the semi-finals, surviving a close 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 match with the Pole Lukasz Kubot.
