The Qatar Open kick starts a new decade of world tennis next week with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the field.
The Qatar Open which begins on January 4th, is the biggest of the ATP events in week one and it always draws some of the top names. Andy Murray has won this title for the past two years but the Scot has opted for the Hopman Cup instead this year.
However with a field headed by Federer, Nadal, Nikolay Davydenko and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Murray will not be missed much.
It will be an important tournament for the big two, their only competitive event ahead of the Australian Open. It isn’t always a great indicator of what is to come in Melbourne, last year Nadal was soundly outplayed by Gael Monfils in the Doha quarter-finals but went on to win his first grand slam down under. The Spaniard has always struggled in this tournament, he’s yet to get further than the quarter-finals.
Federer won this tournament in 2005 and 2006 and he looks to be the odds-on favourite.
