A 75K+H challenger, the field is headed by local boy Pablo Cuevas, ranked 70 in the world. He's the defending champion having won this event last year without dropping a set, beating former clay court greats Gaston Gaudio and Nicolas Lapentti in the process. Cuevas looks hot favourite to make it back to back Copa Petrobas titles having racked up another challenger title in Poland two weeks ago.
His main challengers look to be Argentinians Brian Dabul and Carlos Berlocq, both ranked just inside the top 100. However Dabul's form is indifferent and while Berlocq took the Todi challenger at the start of September, he was outplayed 6-4, 6-0 by Cuevas in Bucharest last week.
So who can challenge Cuevas ? Former Olympic champion Nicolas Massu is well past his peak and has not won a match since May while Santiago Ventura is enjoying far more success in doubles than singles right now.
It looks like the Uruguayan's title to lose.
