Roger Federer defends his Cincinnati title this week at the second Masters 1000 event of the summer.

Federer is a three time Cincinnati champion, having won in 2005, 2007 and 2009. The Swiss looked back on song last week at the Rogers Cup where he finished runner-up, beating Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic on the way to the final. He is seeded to meet Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals which could be a fascinating encounter ahead of the US Open.

Nadal will be hoping to raise his game this week having looked a bit rusty in Toronto, surviving a couple of close battles before being outplayed by Andy Murray in the semi-finals. However, Nadal does not have a good record in Cincinnati. It is the only Masters 1000 event where he has never reached the final.

Murray will be hugely confident having just defended his Rogers Cup title, beating Nadal and Federer back-to-back and he will be the man to beat this week. In those wins he showed just how strong he can be as an attacking force on the hard courts. He knows what it takes in Cincinnati having won the title in 2008.

Novak Djokovic has finished runner-up in Cincinnati for the past two years and the Serb will be hoping it is third time lucky. He lost a desperately close semi-final to Federer in Toronto though he still appears to be some way short of his best.

Two-time champion Andy Roddick merits a mention though the American has only just recovered from a mild bout of glandular fever so we should not expect too much.
