Monaco disposed of qualifier Pere Riba comfortably enough 6-4, 6-2 yesterday and now plays Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas, also yet to drop a set. Cuevas is a workmanlike player who’s moved up the rankings with consistent results in clay challengers. However his chances of maintaining his perfect record so far in this tournament look slim as judging by his previous three matches with Monaco, the Argentine looks to have his number. They have all been one-sided thrashings, the latest a 6-2, 6-4 win for Monaco in Estoril last spring.

Monaco is priced at 3/10 by Paddy Power.

Fabio Fognini caused the tournament’s big upset to date, defeating Nicholas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 on Wednesday. The Italian and his bulldozing forehand could well do the same to the stylish fifth seed Albert Montanes in Friday’s quarters. Montanes has waltzed through his matches so far in Bucharest but he was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Fognini last time they played. Fognini is the best pick if you’re looking for a surprise result, he’s priced at 13/10 with expekt.com.

The other two quarters are wide open with the rest of the seeds all out. Maximo Gonzalez is a slight favourite against Simon Greul who he beat 6-2, 6-4 on clay back in June. Gonzalez is rated at 4/5 with Sky Bet.

Santiago Ventura also looks like another wise pick to make the semis at the expense of Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo. Ventura may be a qualifier but his 6-4, 6-1 win over Igor Andreev was as much of a surprise as Almagro’s loss. Ventura is 4/6 to win withStan James.
