Albert Montanes goes for back to back titles in Bucharest this week at the BCR Open Romania.

Montanes has enjoyed an outstanding 2010 season which has seen him rise to a career best of 22 in the world. The Spaniard has been very impressive on clay, beating Roger Federer on the way to the Estoril title and then claiming the Stuttgart crown in July. However Montanes is far from a one-trick pony and it has taken Federer, Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling (twice) to oust him at each of the slams. He surprised many people at the US Open by reaching the fourth round before going down to Soderling in four sets.
The field in Bucharest this year is quite weak and Montanes is the only elite player in the field. Last year he beat Juan Monaco 7-6, 7-6 in the final to go one better than his 2001 efforts when he came runner-up.
Victor Hanescu will be hoping to perform in front of his home supporters. The seventh seed made the final in Bucharest three years ago and he would love to win this title. However since reaching the Casablanca final in April, Hanescu seems to have lost his mojo and it would be a big surprise if he goes all the way.
Eighth seed Jeremy Chardy could provide Montanes with a tough test in the quarter-finals. Chardy's at his best on hard courts and beat Baghdatis, Davydenko and Verdasco in Canada this summer but he's not bad on clay either and reached the French Open fourth round two years ago.
Watch out for Daniel Gimeno-Traver in this tournament. With so many all-conquering Spaniards around, few will have heard of the 25 year old but he's enjoyed a superb season which has seen him move up to a career high of 53. He excelled on the clay this summer, making semis in Gstaad and Stuttgart and it will not be long before he steps up and reaches a final, possibly this week.
