Both players enjoyed straight sets opening round wins. Robredo overcame Michal Przysiezny 7-6, 6-3 while Golubev was far too strong for Maximo Gonzalez,winning 6-3, 6-2.
Robredo will be hoping to play himself into contention this week after a poor run of form going back to March. He is fortunate that the seed in his quarter is Fernando Verdasco who is in the midst of a similar slump.
He has never played Golubev before but has reason to rate his chances. They both play a very similar sort of hustling baseline game except that Robredo just does everything that much better as you would expect from a player who has been in the top 10.
Golubev has had some reasonable runs in clay challengers this year but when it has come to the main tour, too often he has failed to get through qualifying.
