Fernando Verdasco begins his campaign at the SkiStar Swedish Open on Thursday against Stephane Robert.

Verdasco was one of the form players during the European clay court swing earlier this year, winning Barcelona and reaching finals in Monte Carlo and Nice. However there is always a risk of burnout when you play that many matches and the Spaniard crashed during the grass court season, losing in the first round of Wimbledon.

His woes continued last week during Spain’s Davis Cup tie against France, losing a crucial singles rubber on day one to Michael Llodra to put Spain 2-0 down.

Robert’s rise has been meteoric during the past 16 months. Back in March 2009 he was competed in lowly futures events but by February this year he was in an ATP final in South Africa and is currently ranked 77. He had a poor run on the clay earlier this year, winning just one match and is generally more comfortable on faster surfaces but had no problems in disposing of qualifier Jonathan Dasnieres de Viegy 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round here.

Verdasco may be out of form but he is more at home on the clay than his opponent and he should reach the last eight here.
