David Ferrer takes on Fabio Fognini in round one of the SkiStar Swedish Open.

Ferrer was a champion at the Swedish Open back in 2007 and the Spaniard will be confident of more success this week after enjoying a brilliant spell of form during the spring clay court swing. He showed some extraordinary consistency in reaching the Rome final plus semis in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

However all that tennis possibly took its toll when it came to the French Open.  Ferrer would have expected to feature strongly and was disappointed with a third round exit to Jurgen Melzer.

Fognini only won one match on clay in the lead up to the French Open but he knocked out Gael Monfils on the way to the third round at Roland Garros and continued the giant-killing at Wimbledon where he beat Fernando Verdasco.

Ferrer and Fognini have played once before, the Spaniard winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 at Wimbledon 2009.

Ferrer should win but with Fognini’s heavy forehand, he cannot afford a slow start this week.
