Federer advanced with little trouble earlier today in second round action from Basel, Switzerland.

Roger Federer is well on his way to a 4th consecutive single's title in Basel, Switzerland.  Earlier today he advanced with a win over Andreas Seppi of Italy and the key players in Federer's half of the draw have been victims of early round upsets.

Seppi never looked like he was playing all that badly against Federer today as he made some heavy ground stroke winners and appeared to want to compete early on.  Even when down a set against Federer and down double break point Seppi continued to play well as he won some big points to stay alive in the second set.

However, Federer clearly outmatched the Italian with touch and power and advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The other seeded player in Federer's quarter of the draw was James Blake (41st in the world and sinking), but he fell to Jeremy Chardy in first round action.  Federer's draw to the semis already looked clear, even with Blake in the tournament, but with the minor upset Federer is a now lock to make at least the semifinals.  With Fernando Gonzalez gone via upset, Federer should be in the finals where only Novak Djokovic can be considered good enough to stop the Swiss Maestro.

Seppi, ranked 51st in the world heading into the match, has had a rough time since falling in the first round of the US Open and will need to improve his game if he is going to re-enter the ATP top 30.

Federer now awaits the winner between Evgeny Korolev and Chardy and he, Federer, will be a heavy favorite for that match regardless of who he plays.
