Korolev presents no threat in blocking Federer's path to the semifinals.
Roger Federer and Evgeny Korolev met back at the Australian Open this year. In that match Federer cruised to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 straight sets victory. A straight sets victory is to be expected again tomorrow when the two meet in Basel's quarterfinals.
At this point in his career, despite almost having a top 50 ranking, Korolev is still tossing in losses to some weak competition. He lost last week to Sergiy Stakhovsky (ranked 93rd; all rankings at time of match) in St. Petersburg, although the Ukrainian has been playing much better lately. But a couple weeks ago Korolev also gave up a match to Illya Marchenko in Moscow (ranked 190th).
In fact, the best player that Korolev has beaten this year is Jurgen Melzer (ranked 32nd) and that was back in February at Zagreb. Korolev hasn't shown any signs of being able to defeat someone of Federer's calibre or even coming close to it.
Federer should cruise through this match as he is on form in his home town's tournament and he looked sharp against Andreas Seppi, a better player than Korolev.
