John Isner and Arnaud Clement contest the Heineken Open final.
The Heineken Open has thrown up more than a few surprises this week. The big serving Isner has been the surprise package of the week.
Standing at 6’9, Isner possesses a towering serve and has made steady progress up to 33 in the world since he burst onto the world stage two years ago.
On the way to the final this week he has taken out tournament favourite, the in-form Tommy Robredo as well as seeds Juan Monaco and Albert Montanes. Robredo gave Isner his toughest test in the quarters but under the pressure of the American’s big serving, Robredo wilted to lose 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
Seeking to deny Isner his first tour title is the veteran Arnaud Clement who turns 33 this year. The wily Clement is at his best on outdoor hard and nine years ago he went all the way to the Australian Open final. He has had little trouble making the final, not dropping a set against David Ferrer, Jurgen Melzer or 2008 winner Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Isner beat Clement 6-2, 7-6 in Sydney qualifying last year but with Clement in fine form it should be a lot closer this time round.
