Mardy Fish takes on British wildcard James Ward in the first round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Fish is now back in the top 50 after a successful grass court season in which he won the Newport title and reached the Queens club final. He will be aiming high over the next month or so on the fast, bouncy American hard courts, a surface where he has had plenty of success in the past, making the final at Indian Wells a couple of years ago.

Ward has received his wildcard as part of a deal between the LTA and the USTA to reward the Brit for his recent good form. Ward beat Feliciano Lopez and Rainer Schuettler on the way to the Eastbourne quarters just before Wimbledon and then helped the British Davis Cup team to a 5-0 win over Turkey. This is his first taste of the main tour outside of the grass court season.

Fish is big favourite but the match may not be as one sided as many might think. Outdoor hard is Ward's best surface, he qualified for an ATP event on hard courts at the start of the year and possesses a booming serve and excellent backhand.

Expect Fish to win but do not be surprised if Ward grabs a set.
