A bad start for the top seeds in the WTA Madrid Masters

The WTA Madrid Masters have started in a bizarre fashion, with many of the tournament favourites going out in the first two rounds. Whilst a number of the worlds best remain in the draw, the first two rounds have seen the elimination of Justine Henin, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska.
Henin’s early exit was perhaps the biggest shock. Her defeat at the hands of Aravane Rezai put the brakes on her surge into the top ten, and came as a huge surprise given her ability to destroy opponents on clay. Sharapova’s straight sets loss against Lucie Safarova was also unexpected, making the first round a very intriguing spectacle.
This theme has continued in round two, with Caroline Wozniacki’s loss against Alona Bondarenko standing out in particular. Wozniacki never really got going against Bondarenko and was broken on serve five times, eventually losing 6-2, 6-3. Serena Williams was very fortunate not to suffer the same fate in round two as she scraped past Vera Dushevina in three sets, all of which were settled with tie-breakers.
It seems as if this tournament is bringing out the best in the lower ranked competitors, and it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to emerge from this hotly contested event with the title. The top class facilities and prestige associated with a masters event appear to be a motivating factor here, and this may be why the playing field appears to have been leveled somewhat.
The Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open has been wildly unpredictable so far, and has been exciting to follow. The rest of the week promises to be thrilling, and it will be fascinating to see who makes it to the weekend.
