There's no way the greatest player of all time should be considered washed-up so long as he is still younger than 30.

Roger Federer is the 5 time US Open champion and currently in the futures market for the final Slam of the year, his backers can do no better than +300 (3/1; Coral) in the outright winner's market.

Federer has not been active on tour lately as he has not contended a tournament since failing to defend his Wimbledon title. However he has made some news in the last month as he announced a trial basis partnership with Paul Annacone, the man who coached Pete Sampras for a significant part of his career.

Federer is not the type of player to accept under-achieving without making changes and his results should be improving again soon.  It's true that they have started to drop off but just the fact that he remains defiant against sliding down the ranks is a great sign from the world number 3.

Andy Murray has done little to warrant backing at his skimpy odds of +550 (Bodog) while 5th favorite Robin Soderling has never made a Grand Slam semifinal outside of the French Open.  Djokovic at +1600 isn't a bad pick on the world number 2 on the basis of his deep runs at Flushing Meadows in the past, and based on how long his odds are, but Nadal at +275 (11/4; Boylesports) is the player to avoid.

Those who are counting Federer out do not fully understand what the Swiss Maestro is about.  Remember, he was being written off at the 2010 Australian Open and he came out swinging.  The talk was that one of either Murray, Djokovic, or even Nikolay Davydenko was going to win the Slam but when the championship trophy was being lifted it was Federer who was hoisting it.

Murray was choked up at the hands of Federer and Davydenko was long gone thanks to Federer as well.

Current analysis of the Swiss Maestro and the US Open is overly reliant on Federer's recent form.  Stats and results are important but they are not everything and Federer has the character and mentality to win the US Open again.

Just when he is being written off - that's when he wins because Federer is not only the master of tennis, he is the master of proving people wrong.
