Roger Federer's current price is likely as good as it will get.
Roger Federer proved over the last month that, regardless of opponent, he still has an edge on the entire field of the ATP tour. By winning both the French Open and Wimbledon, the first time in his career that he has done that, Federer not only proven that he is the best ever but he's reclaimed the world's number one ranking.
As the hard court season begins and takes us to the US Open, the field does still seem like it is creeping up on Federer a little.
At present, here are the bet365 odds to win the 2009 US Open for the top 8 players:
1. Roger Federer, +150 (3/2)
2. Andrew Murray, +250 (5/2)
3. Rafael Nadal, +350 (7/2)
4. Novak Djokovic, +700 (7/1)
5. Andy Roddick, +800 (8/1)
6. Juan Martin Del Potro, +1000 (10/1)
7. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, +1600 (16/1)
8. Fernando Verdasco, +2800 (28/1)
Federer has won the US Open 5 times in a row and coming off of back to back Slams it is hard to find a weakness in his game. Currently set at +150 (3/2) one has to think that his odds are going to shorten as betting starts to pick up as we move away from Wimbledon. With Federer's complete dominance recently and his historical dominance at the US Open, it is really quite hard to find value in the other favorites but there is at least some.
Murray has certainly proven that he is capable of taking Federer out as he, Murray, is 6-2 against the Swiss Maestro heads up. However, Murray did lose to Federer in the US Open final last year and not only that, but Murray has more trouble with the field of men's players in general than Federer does and there are 128 players in Grand Slams. At +250 (5/2) Murray does not appear to offer great value.
The US Open is the only Slam that Rafael Nadal has not won and, in fact, he has yet to make the final. It is a bit of an oddity in his career because his hardcourt game isn't weak at all but for whatever reason he just doesn't compete as well at the US Open as he does in other Slams. Also, Nadal hasn't been a factor in the last two Slams now, going out in the French Open in the fourth round and not playing at Wimbledon. Before any US Open bets are placed on Nadal, he needs to be examined in summer tournaments.
Of the top 8 favorites the two players that have some value are Andy Roddick and Juan Martin Del Potro.
Andy Roddick just finished an incredible Wimbledon where he actually challenged for the title and was never out of the finals match. He's improved his physical conditioning and was very surprising to be able to not only beat Murray in the semis but to push Federer to an incredibly well contested fifth set in the championship. Roddick has won the US Open before and the way he is playing at the moment he looks like good value at +800 (8/1).
Del Potro also looks like good value at +1000 (10/1). He's considered to be a 'future' star in tennis, but really he is already a top-ten player. He fell in the second round at Wimbledon but that was against Lleyton Hewitt who we now know, in hindsight, is playing better tennis than he's been playing in years.
