Serena and Murray sparkle at London 2012

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 05: Andy Murray of Great Britain poses with his gold and silver medals holding a union jack after the medal ceremony for the Mixed Doubles Tennis on Day 9 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on August 5, 2012 in London, England (credit: Paul Gilham/AFP/Getty Images)

After a great week of tennis, we reflect on the action from the London 2012 Olympic tennis tournament

We enjoyed a breathtaking week at Wimbledon this year during the Olympic tennis tournament, leaving us with plenty to look back on as we continue to progress towards the 2012 US Open. A few of the results here seem to indicate that we’re in for some changes in the ATP and WTA.

The big result was Andy Murray’s three set triumph over Roger Federer in the men’s singles final. The Scot went beyond simply avenging his Wimbledon final defeat, as he stunned the Swiss legend with arguably the greatest display of his career. Perhaps the success of Murray here hints towards a future slam title.

The other big news in the singles draw was the bronze medal won by Juan Martin Del Potro. The former US Open champ produced his best ever run on grass, indicating that he could be a genuine contender at the All-England Club in years to come. The Argentine might just have fully recovered from his injury woes. Maybe we’ll be talking about ‘the big five’ in the near future.

The women’s singles provided Serena Williams with a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate her dominance over the rest of the WTA competition. The American demolished every opponent in her wake, including Maria Sharapova who fell to a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the final. A return to No. 1 seems likely for Serena. Her rivals, meanwhile, must be wondering what they have to do to get the better of her.

We saw some great matches in doubles competition, with the Bryan brothers and Williams sisters remaining the dominant forces. Laura Robson can draw encouragement for her brave displays in the mixed doubles, whilst Max Mirnyi was able to cap a superb career with Olympic gold when paired with Victoria Azarenka.
