Federer back in town and chasing Olympic glory

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 23: Roger Federer of Switzerland plays a forehand in a practice session during previews ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon on July 23, 2012 in London, England. (credit: Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
Roger Federer is getting ready for the Olympics. The Wimbledon champion is back in London and practising on the grass courts of SW19.

Just two weeks after winning his seventh Wimbledon title, Federer arrived back in London today and hit the grass courts of SW19 with close friend Stanislas Wawrinka to prepare for the start of the Olympic tennis event which begins on Saturday.

The last balls of Wimbledon 2012 were struck just over a fortnight ago but the groundstaff have worked miracles in the meantime and the grass is back to it's pristine best. It feels a little strange to see the All England Club covered in the vibrant logos of London 2012 and Serena Williams admitted in her press conference that she's not particularly looking forward to wearing team colours at Wimbledon rather than the usual all-white.

Federer is going for gold on two fronts. He'll be defending his men's doubles title with Wawrinka but he'll also be seeking the only major prize in tennis he's yet to win - that coveted singles gold medal. The Swiss is leaving nothing to chance so as in Beijing, he won't be staying in the Olympic village.

“I’ve stayed in the Olympic Village twice before. In Athens, when I was No1 it was distracting (he lost to Tomas Berdych in the second round), but in a good way I suppose," he said. “I thought it would be impossible for London. So I’ll do the same as I did for Wimbledon, rent the same house, have the same routine and hopefully be successful.”
