Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer is in third round action later today against the talented young Japanese star Kei Nishikori.

Ferrer is in the form of his life and at the age of 30 this is probably the Spaniard's best and last chance of winning an Olympic medal. He's the fourth seed as well as Spain's leading hope in the absence of Rafa Nadal and after reaching the Wimbledon quarters for the first time in his career, he has a great shot of making the last four and putting himself in contention.

Ferrer has yet to be really tested and he's had a nice draw but it's still been a couple of impressive performances to dispatch Canada's Vasek Pospisil and Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic without dropping a set.

It's been much tougher for Nishikori but given that grass isn't his best surface he's done extremely well to make the last sixteen, overcoming Bernard Tomic in two tiebreaks and battling past former world number three Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. As he showed at January's Australian Open, he can't be counted out. He stunned Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to make the quarters there so Ferrer will certainly have to be on his game.

They're 1-1 on the head-to-head with Nishikori pulling off an upset in a thrilling five setter at the 2008 US Open and Ferrer getting revenge in Tokyo last year, defeating Nishikori 6-4, 6-3 in front of his home fans.
