The form book was almost thrown out of the window on Saturday in Stuttgart, as Julia Goerges came incredibly close to denying Petra Kvitova a 26th successive indoor win. The Czech eventually won a battle of wills to see off Goerges, with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory. Earlier on, Iveta Benesova had achieved a shock win over Sabine Lisicki in the opening singles rubber.

“It was really little difference between us,” stated Kvitova after her win. “It was a very tough match and Julia played very well all match and she served very well and it wasn’t easy to finish the match with my serve.”

Kvitova will now have the chance to seal a huge win for the Czech Republic when she takes on Lisicki in the first reverse singles rubber on Sunday. Lisicki’s first set against Benesova went according to plan on Saturday, but she seemed to crumble as Benesova fought back.

After Saturday’s action, Kvitova enters this match as the clear favourite. Still, Lisicki should have all of the tools required to succeed on an indoor hard court. If Lisicki can stay composed, Kvitova will have to dig deep in order to take the scoreline to 3-0.
