The Fed Cup final between Russia and the Czech Republic will begin on Saturday with a singles match between Maria Kirilenko and Petra Kvitova. Czech hopes will be largely pinned on Kvitova’s performances, and the recently crowned WTA Championships winner will be aiming to maintain her superb run of form and succeed in both of her matches this weekend.

Kirilenko wasn’t expected to be in the Russian line-up, given that she’s not played a Fed Cup contest since 2006. However, the withdrawal of Vera Zvonareva due to injury opened up a place in the team. Kirilenko’s been in reasonably good form this season, but she has a huge task on her hands here against the world No. 2.

Kirilenko’s inclusion might also have something to do with her 2-0 head to head record against Kvitova. The pairing haven’t met since 2009 though, so things seem likely to be different this time around. After the year that she’s had, Kvitova will enter this contest of the favourite, and it looks like Kirilenko will need to be on top form to maintain her winning streak against the 21 year-old.
