Federer will not be back in action until the Rogers Cup in mid-August as he takes stock of a very disappointing month.
Federer’s quarter-final defeat to Tomas Berdych on Wednesday stunned the sporting world. It’s the first time he has failed to reach the Wimbledon final for eight years and following soon after his French Open quarter-final loss, it seems that the Swiss is displaying new levels of fallibility.
Federer’s dominance of the smaller tournaments has been in decline for several years, no longer winning titles for fun as he once did. But when it came to the slams, a Federer loss before the semi-finals was something unthinkable. Now it’s happened twice in a row.
Federer is still playing exceptionally good tennis, he is just finding it increasingly hard to tap into that realm of genius he used to inhabit so frequently, particularly at the defining moments of matches. And with the likes of Berdych, Robin Soderling and Juan Martin Del Potro starting to gain more belief in their talent, Federer suddenly has far more rivals to worry about than Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Roddick.
It is way too soon to write off Federer as a slam contender. After all next up is the US Open where the last time he failed to reach the final was 2003.
However while twelve months ago it seemed a question of when Federer would hit the 20 slam mark, now that seems more of a distant dream.
