Roger Federer was far from his best in the Olympic tennis final, but Fed fans needn’t worry. We’ve seen the Swiss legend lose matches like this one and bounce back. The new No. 1 has plenty to look forward to despite going down in three sets against Andy Murray. Here we take a look at five notable Federer losses, in no particular order.

.Roland Garros final 2008 - Federer will count his 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 defeat against Rafael Nadal in the 2008 French Open final amongst the worst defeat of his career. Federer entered the tournament in search of a career Grand slam, but ran into the brick wall that was Nadal on red clay in his prime. The match lasted for less than two hours.

.US Open final 2009 - This wasn’t a poor performance from Federer, but could be seen as one of the matches that saw him lose some of his invincible aura. Having been 2-1 up against Juan Martin Del Potro, Federer met a fierce resistance from the young Argentine before suffering a 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 loss.

.Wimbledon quarter-finals 2010 - Roger Federer had only lost one match at Wimbledon since 2002 prior to his shock 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Tomas Berdych. Federer left the court with concerns over an injured back and leg, but unforced errors hampered the all-time great as much as mobility issues, as the Czech romped home for a confident win.

.US Open semi-final 2011 - Federer’s quest to get his hands on another slam suffered a setback in the US Open semi-finals last season, as Novak Djokovic pulled off a sensational comeback to clinch a 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 victory. Federer had chances to win the match but was up against a machine in Djokovic, who had appeared to be invincible for much of the season. After throwing away a two set lead, some critics argued that Federer’s days as a slam contender were drawing to a close.

.Olympic final 2012 - Federer’s loss to Andy Murray at the All-England Club was unexpectedly one-sided. The Scot took gold with a crushing 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 success over the top seed. Despite having beaten Murray earlier in the season in the Wimbledon final, Federer seemed to have no answers for an outstanding Murray display.
