Maria Sharapova is looking forward to making an impact at Wimbledon after a successful fortnight of preparation.

Wimbledon has always held a special place in Sharapova’s heart ever since she won the title six years ago at the tender age of just 17. In doing so the Russian instantly sealed her path to fame and fortune, becoming a global sporting icon with her glamorous looks and flashing forehand.

Even for someone as experienced on the big stage as Sharapova, the prospect of competing at Wimbledon still gives her goosebumps.

“You really feel the atmosphere, the intensity of something going on. I always look forward to it, I love this tournament as much as I did many years ago,” she said.

Since 2004, Sharapova has never come close to repeating her success, a combination of injuries and the dominance of the Williams’ sisters continually thwarting her.

She has competed sparsely in 2010 but a decent performance against Justine Henin at Roland Garros showed signs of a revival and she enjoyed a very good week at Edgbaston, reaching the final and smashing a 121 mph serve along the way.

Sharapova still has to be very careful of her troublesome right shoulder and is hoping that the traditional Wimbledon rain stays away for the next fortnight (the injury gets worse in the cold).

She is seeded 16th for the tournament and begins against Anastasia Pivovarova with the prospect of a potential clash against Serena Williams in the last 16.
