It takes something special to catch the eye of the talent scouts from IMG.

These men are hard-nosed veterans of assessing the myriad of young tennis hopefuls who flood through the doors of academies every year but 15 year old Croatian Donna Vekic has been on their radar for quite some time.

There’s a growing excitement among Croatian fans about the future prospects of the teenager from Osijek, a former war-stricken town in the centre of the country’s Eastern region called Slavonia.

Croatian fans have become accustomed to the exploits of their heroes of the men’s circuit, the likes of Ivanisevic, Ancic and Ljubicic who have all mixed it with the world’s best but it’s been a while since they’ve had anything to shout about on the WTA Tour.

Vekic was just 1 year old when Iva Majoli beat Martina Hingis to win the 1997 French Open, one of the biggest Grand Slam final upsets of the decade and the last time a Croatian woman won a major.

However if she continues her rapid progress, she could be well placed to emulate the feats of Majoli in a few years. Already ranked 392 after barely a year on the professional tour, IMG have secured her the services of David Felgate, a man who made his name as Tim Henman’s coach. Having coached some of the sport’s biggest names, Felgate wouldn’t be wasting his time traveling to places like Bangalore and Lagos unless he thought he had serious potential on his hands.

Vekic, remember the name, you could be hearing plenty more of her in the future.
