The Davis Cup quarter-final ties have been taking place over the weekend and former champions Serbia are out of the competition.

Spain, Czech Republic, Argentina and the USA are all into September's semi-finals are three enthralling days of Davis Cup tennis.

With David Ferrer back in action for Spain, the defending champions were rarely tested. Austria are essentially a one-man side relying on the inspirational Jurgen Melzer but even he was up against it when facing Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro on clay. The Austrians nicked the doubles but Ferrer eased past Melzer on day three to seal the win.

The most fascinating battle was between France and the USA. Yet again, the Americans showed that they can win even when faced with a slow clay court. Switzerland were annihilated in February and now the French were made to suffer on their home turf. Once again John Isner played a starring role, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon in Monte Carlo while the Bryan brothers showed why they're the world's best pairings with victory in the crucial doubles rubber.

Marin Cilic returned to form in a big way beating David Nalbandian in five sets but it wasn't enough to save Croatia as they faced the formidable Argentinians in Bueno Aires. Juan Martin Del Potro was in imperious form, winning both singles rubbers while Nalbandian came good with Eduardo Schwank in the doubles, beating Cilic and Ivo Karlovic in a dramatic five setter.

But 2010 champions Serbia were put to the sword by the Czech Republic. It was a sweet victory for Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek after an agonising semi-final loss to the Serbs two years ago.
