The former world No. 1 got the first set against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova finished in style, but was forced to work a little harder as the match continued. She eventually left the court with a 6-0, 6-4 success, setting up a meeting with Greta Arn.
There were concerns as Serena stumbled in the last game of the match. “It's totally fine. It was my good ankle, so I'm good,” remarked the 5-time champion. There was no extra pain. I twisted it. But it's all taped up, so the tape really, really helped.” Serena attributed the slip to her ‘wobbly ankles’. “I wasn't meant to be a ballerina or anything,” she joked.
“I knew I had to get there too, because I do everything she does,” admitted Serena after the match, in reference to her 500th win, and the fact that her sister, Venus, has already amassed an incredible 589 wins at WTA level. “It's great, it's like the ultimate,” she added. “Five hundred is a lot of matches to play, let alone to win.”
