The former world number one and four-time Australian Open champion needed less than two hours to dispatch his 11th-seeded opponent in the quarter-finals. He became the first to reach the semi-final in the men’s draw and now faces the winner of the Rafael Nadal v Tomas Berdych match in the last-four match.

While del Potro put in more first serves than his opponent, Federer’s 38 winners to the Argentine’s 20 in the match, was the difference between the two. Del Potro also had 27 unforced errors against him while Federer notched up 22 of those.

Del Potro had gone into the match with some fans backing him to cause issues to Federer after having beaten the Swiss player in the 2009 US Open final. But Federer proved too strong for his opponent and barely put a foot wrong to wrap up the match easily.
