Before the Australian Open even started, the possibility of a Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal men’s singles final had been the subject of plenty of discussion, with many tipping the top two seeds to meet on the last day. Following almost two weeks of incredible tennis, expectations have been met, and the Serb and the Spaniard will do battle for one of the most prestigious titles in the game.

Nadal booked his place in the final by defying Roger Federer in four sets. Nadal’s head to head record against Federer may well be stacked in the world No. 2’s favour, but beating Federer is still a monumental feat, and Nadal played some superb tennis to get past his rival.

Djokovic didn’t achieve such a straightforward route to the final. He was pushed to five sets by Andy Murray, who would have had the chance to serve for the match if he hadn’t been shut down on three break point opportunities. Djokovic will surely be fatigued after this marathon effort, but he’s got until Sunday to recuperate.

Djokovic takes a 16-13 head to head record against the world No. 1 into this match, but this doesn’t tell the full story of the exchanges between these two phenomenal players. Djokovic, following his sensational 2011 season, is currently on a six-match winning streak against Nadal, and would seem to be the favourite. Still, Nadal is clearly in with a chance, and writing him off would be ridiculous. This should be a tremendous slam final.
