Petra Kvitova’s run in the 2012 Australian Open will continue for at least a few more days, as she’s managed to edge past former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic in straight sets. Despite making one of the worst errors of the tournament, a terribly botched smash, Kvitova held her nerve in the second set when the Serb attempted to stage a comeback.

The match finished 6-2, 7-6, with Kvitova eventually coming good in a tie-breaker. Ivanovic may look back on this match as one that she could have at least pushed to three sets, though there is no shame whatsoever in losing in straight sets to the world No. 2. However, Ivanovic has clearly made improvements to her game in recent months, and she’ll have wanted to reassert herself as one of the world’s best by making the quarter-finals here.

Kvitova appears to have a favourable draw in the last eight. She’ll meet either Jie Zheng or Sara Errani. Zheng would seem to be the favourite to pull through. She’s started the season in style, and her movement around the court is almost unparalleled.
