Clijsters won the 2011 meeting here between the pairing 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and she believes that the contest was one of the most exhilarating of her superb career.
“That was one of my favorite matches I’ve ever played. I won, so that helped,” said Clijsters ahead of Sunday’s showdown. “Of all the Grand Slam finals I’ve played, that was the one with the highest standard. Although she lost, I think it helped her to win the French Open,” continued Clijsters.
Li certainly seems to agree with that sentiment. “After that match I was feeling I really can win the Grand Slam,” commented Li when speaking to reporters. Li also drew upon likenesses in the duo’s style of play. “I think we play the same way, like play against a mirror.”
This matchup doesn’t require any hype, it will simply be one of the best matches of the tournament if both competitors can avoid injury. Li will be keen to find the momentum that made 2011 a career-best season, whilst ‘Aussie Kim’, will be hoping for one last glorious run in Melbourne.
