Lleyton Hewitt put up a good fight against world number 1 Novak Djokovic but was given his marching orders when he didn't recover from a break in the 4th set. The match finished 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 possibly ending Hewitt's final attempt at winning the Australian Open on home soil. Djokovic will now play Spain's David Ferrer in the quarter-finals on Wednesday at 00:00 GMT.
Andy Murray kept British hopes alive today when he was practically handed his ticket into the final 8 of the Aussie Open. Mikhail Kukushkin retired while trailing 6-1, 6-1, 1-0 due to a left hip flexor problem.
Also on court were Richard Gasquet v David Ferrer (4-6, 4-6, 1-6) and Kei Nishikori v Jowilfried Tsonga which sent the French star home after a 5 set struggle.
Over in the ladies competition, we saw a shock exit when Russian Ekaterina Makarova beat 5 time champion Serena Williams in straight sets 6-2 and 6-3, while Czeck Petra Kvitova stuck her heels in to win the second set tie breaker 7-2 to win the match.
After a disappointing first set, Maria Sharapova managed to take the upper hand against abine Lisicki from Germany (6-3, 2-6, 3-6) while Sara Errani coasted straight into the next round after a quick and easy 6-2, 6-1 win over Jie Zheng from China.
