The Australian Open 2012 kicks off on Monday January 16th with a host of star names headlining the order of play on day one.
The most intriguing match-up is the clash between budding superstar Bernard Tomic and former semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco. Verdasco has not been at his best for some time while Tomic has enjoyed a superb start to 2012, winning the Kooyong Classic last week and beating two top ten players in the process. However can he do it under the spotlight ? It's a fascinating one and if Tomic wins, he has the potential to go deep over the next fortnight.
Equally intriguing will be the first round matches for Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki. Both players have been serious injury doubts in the lead-up to the tournament and although they've been declared fit to compete, will they be in the shape to challenge for the title ?
Former champions Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal kick off their Aussie Open campaigns, both against qualifiers. Should be easy wins for both but Federer will be keen to test out his dodgy back over best of five sets.
Last year's runner-up Na Li also has a potentially tricky opener against former junior champion Ksenia Pervak. Li has rediscovered her form over the past fortnight, reaching the Sydney final and could be a strong contender once again.
