Andy Roddick begins his Australian Open campaign against dangerous Dutchman Robin Haase.
Much of the media attention around Roddick in the lead-up to this tournament has focused on his flashy new haircut and his decision to enter the mixed doubles with Serena Williams. The duo have been friends for a long time and previously announced their intention to compete together at the London Olympics.
It could also be a sign that Roddick recognises his days of challenging for the Australian Open singles title are up. Five years ago, Roddick would have never have dreamed of diverting his attention away from the main prize.
His 2012 campaign could be over almost before it's begun if Haase performs to his potential. The Dutchman is one of the most dangerous ball-strikers in men's tennis and almost knocked Andy Murray out of last year's US Open but he's also extremely inconsistent and crashed out in the first round of Sydney last week.
They actually played in the third round of last year's Aussie Open and Roddick received a bit of a scare before prevailing 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2.
Conditions are forecast to be desperately hot again on day two and this will suit Roddick whose conditioning has always been one of his strengths.
Prediction: Haase to start strongly before fading. Roddick in 4.
