Roger Federer believes that Andy Murray will be a serious contender at Wimbledon this year.

Murray reached the Australian Open final at the start of the year but since then his form has declined dramatically and when defending his Queens title two weeks ago, the world number four crashing out in the third round.

However Federer believes that Murray is a different animal at the slams than in normal ATP events.

"I think, regardless of what happened between here and the Australian Open, Andy is one of the big favourites for this tournament," the Swiss said. "You have to maybe ignore a little bit what happened in between and remember the last time you played a best-of-five-sets match. This is when he was very tough. I think it favours the big guys. Andy's obviously one of them."

Federer himself has hardly enjoyed a rosy ride since claiming his 16th slam down under at the start of the year and relinquished his French Open and Halle titles recently.

Federer admitted he was surprised at how the results dried up since Australia, "I know my game, my body and everything so well that I really expected to take off and just go on a tear after that. Maybe the lung infection did throw me back a bit, not having played so much through March and April.” 

"It hurt. It was disappointing. But I think I found my game again in Madrid. I played well there and in Paris. In Halle I think the performances were good. That's why I'm confident for Wimbledon."
