Marcos Baghdatis leads the field this week at the Pilot Pen Open in New Haven.

Baghdatis is top seed and the Cypriot will have high hopes of going all the way this week. He's had a great month, reaching the Washington final and the Cincinnati semi-finals and is playing his best tennis for several years, possibly a result of teaming up with former coach Guillaume Peyre at the start of the hard court season. In Cincinnati, Baghdatis beat Rafael Nadal for the first time in seven matches and also enjoyed wins over Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych.

However he will face a strong challenge from fourth seed Mardy Fish, another player on the rise again. Since mid-June, Fish has been a player reborn, reaching the Queens final, winning titles in Newport and Atlanta and coming runner-up in Cincinnati to Roger Federer. He's crediting a ruthless fitness regime for getting him in the best shape he's ever been in. Fish has twice made the New Haven final, back in 2007 and 2008.

Fernando Gonzalez is the third seed but he has not really had enough matches recently be to a serious threat. Thomaz Bellucci is seeded second but the Brazilian is nowhere near as effective on hard courts as he is on clay.

Two time champion James Blake has taken a wildcard. The veteran won this title in 2005 and 2007 but he's been struggling for wins this year and is unlikely to get too far.
