Marcos Baghdatis is unseeded in this year’s ATP Brisbane Open, but he stands out as a potential challenger for the title. Even top seed and runaway favourite Andy Murray was quick to point out that the Cypriot could be a threat here. That said, the Scot also hinted that Baghdatis’s first round opponent, Ryan Harrison, could also defy expectations.
Former Murray coach Miles MacLagan, who is now working with Baghdatis, thinks that the world No. 44 can climb up the rankings once again if he takes a more aggressive approach to his tennis.
“I think he (Baghdatis) could have some really good results because he plays an exciting and aggressive game that can make a lot of players uncomfortable and can beat anyone on his day,” stated MacLagan. “He was playing an aggressive style at the end of the year, so my main hope is for him to continue this, so that it becomes second nature.”
MacLagan is also confident about Baghdatis’s hopes for a lengthy run in Slam competition. At 26, (Baghdatis) is in good shape. At the start of this year he was ranked about No. 20, so he can definitely get back to that and further. With his ability to beat almost anyone it would be great to see him go a long way in a slam.”
Even so, Harrison will have ambitions of his own. The 19 year-old is one of the most exciting players that the United States have produced in recent years. Baghdatis will need to be sharp in order to get past the rising star.
