Juan Monaco is the top seed in this year’s ATP Vina Del Mar Open, and in his opening matchup he proved exactly why he’s the tournament favourite with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Igor Andreev. Andreev is no pushover, and had even beaten Monaco on two occasions in the past. The world No. 29 had everything his own way on this occasion though.

Monaco is a two-time runner-up here, and he seemed happy to return with a win. “It’s always great to come back to a place where you feel so comfortable,” remarked the Argentine. “It was my first clay match of the year and sometimes you’re not sure about how you’ll play, so I’m very happy about the level I had.”

Next up for Monaco is a tough quarter-final clash with fifth seed Albert Montanes. Montanes is currently ranked just outside of the top fifty, but he’s hovered in and around the top thirty in recent years. He earned the right to take on Monaco with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Rogerio Dutra Silva, taking control of the match in the second set.

This should be an exciting battle. Monaco should be able to scrape through, but if Montanes is on song, he might be able to defy the odds.
