The ATP Zagreb Open returned this week for another seven days of exciting tennis inside Zagreb’s Dom Sportova. Whilst the event takes place directly after the Australian Open, a number of big names will be on court here, and the competition for the title is fierce.

Home hopeful Ivan Dodig returns as the defending champion. This tournament has tended to provide the ideal setting for Croatian players to showcase their talents, and Dodig has upheld this trend. He won the first ATP title of his career at this event last season, and he’ll be hoping for another big week.

The supporting cast is strong, with the likes of Marin Cilic, Ivan Ljubicic, Mikhail Youzhny, Marcos Baghdatis, Robin Haase and Ivo Karlovic in attendance. Cilic will be aiming to make up for last year’s failure where he entered as the top seed but couldn’t get beyond the last eight. Ljubicic enters with ambitions of rolling back the years and reclaiming the title that he won here in 2006.

Youzhny and Baghdatis will be keen to produce the goods also. Baghdatis will perhaps be more eager to get on court than anyone. He managed to destroy four rackets in his last match at the Australian Open out of frustration with how he was playing. Maybe he can redirect his energies to better effect in Zagreb.

The power of Haase and Karlovic should add to this event. Haase has an exciting attacking game, which has thwarted some of the best players on the ATP World Tour. Karlovic’s best years are behind him, but his sheer size and ripping serve could put him in with a chance.
