The Spaniard needed only 42 minutes to prevail as he converted five of his seven break points.
"Sometimes you find good feelings and sometimes it works," said Ferrer. "Today I was very good throughout the match, attacking well with my first serve, and maybe he was a little bit nervous."
The top-seeded Ferrer is bidding to win this ATP World Tour 250 grass-court tournament for the second time after victory on his debut in 2008 (d. Gicquel). He improved to an ATP joint-best (with Rafael Nadal) 41-8 match record on a season that has seen him win three titles. He was victorious on hard court in Auckland (d. Rochus) and won a pair of clay-court titles in Buenos Aires (d. Almagro) and
Acapulco (d. Verdasco).
Ferrer goes onto face France’s Benoit Paire, who fired 15 aces as he defeated Japan’s Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 7-5 in 72 minutes. World No. 60 Paire is enjoying a career-best campaign that saw him reach his first ATP World Tour final in Belgrade (l. to Seppi).
German qualifier Philipp Petzschner struck 14 aces and broke serve twice as he overcame Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 7-6(6) in one hour and 35 minutes. Petzschner, who has dropped to World No. 145 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is through to his first ATP World Tour semi-final in more than a year, since reaching the 2011 Halle final (l. to Kohlschreiber).
For a place in the final, Petzschner will face Belgium’s Xavier Malisse, who battled past Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in 86 minutes. The 31-year-old Malisse, a former semi-finalist at Wimbledon, earned his 13th match win of the season. Last week he reached the quarter-finals at The Queen’s Club (l. to Nalbandian).
